What is Positioning?
Positioning is the deliberate context a company creates so a specific audience understands what an offering is, who it is for, what valuable problem it solves, how it differs from alternatives, and why those differences matter. Positioning is a strategic choice; messaging is how that choice is expressed.
Why does Positioning matter?
Weak positioning forces every campaign and salesperson to re-explain the product, increasing confusion and acquisition cost.
How does Positioning work?
Define competitive alternatives, differentiated capabilities, customer value, best-fit customers, category, and credible proof; test comprehension and preference.
Positioning is not messaging
- Positioning chooses the customer, competitive context, differentiated value, category, and proof.
- Messaging expresses those choices in language for a specific buyer, channel, and moment.
- If every campaign needs a new explanation of what the product is and why it matters, the positioning has not become shared operating context.
