What is Human in the Loop (HITL)?

Human in the loop, or HITL, is a workflow design in which a person contributes judgment, approval, correction, or craft at a defined point in an AI-enabled process. The human is part of how the work is completed, especially when context is ambiguous, stakes are high, or quality is difficult to evaluate automatically.

Why does Human in the Loop matter?

AI can increase speed and scale, while people remain accountable for taste, exceptions, relationships, and consequential decisions.

How does Human in the Loop (HITL) work?

Specify exactly when human intervention is required, who is qualified, what evidence they see, and what decision they own.

Place the human where judgment changes the outcome

  • Require a person when the brief is ambiguous, the action is difficult to reverse, confidence is low, or quality depends on taste and lived experience.
  • Do not add approval to every step. Define the exact decision the human owns and the evidence needed to make it.
  • Measure review time, correction rate, escalations, quality, and downstream outcomes—not simply the number of approvals.
